Santa Cruz is getting a brand-new welcome mat, and itās being crafted by some of our most talented local artists. The Ocean Street Gateway Beautification Project is transforming the entryway into Santa Cruzāfrom Highway 17 into Ocean Streetāinto a vibrant, visually stunning space that reflects the spirit and creativity of our community. More than just landscaping, this project brings large-scale public art to the forefront, telling stories of nature, culture, and identity right at the cityās doorstep.
At the heart of the project are two standout artists: Chris āMozeā Mosley and Melissa Marzan. Moze, a sculptor known for his striking work in glass and metal, is creating a series of life-sized native wildlife sculptures. Imagine blue herons, deer, banana slugs, and red foxes emerging from the landscapeāan artistic homage to the creatures that call Santa Cruz home. His vision is grounded in both beauty and message, drawing inspiration from the redwoods and the rich biodiversity of our region.
Meanwhile, Melissa Marzan is crafting a bold āSanta Cruzā sign carved from redwood, with each letter hand-painted to highlight a different local sceneāfrom beaches and forests to surfboards and symbols representing Indigenous cultures. Her attention to detail and storytelling through visuals will create an iconic moment for visitors and residents alikeāa true photo-worthy landmark that captures the essence of the area.
What makes this project even more special is the community behind it. Both artists are deeply rooted in Santa Cruz, and their work speaks to the place they call home. Moze even mentioned that this is one of the first times heās been paid a living wage for doing what he lovesāan example of how the city is investing in its creative voices. The collaboration between the City of Santa Cruz, RHAA Landscape Architecture, and local talent shows whatās possible when public art is seen as a vital part of civic life.
As work continues behind the scenes, with installation expected to begin in 2026, thereās a growing excitement about what this gateway will become. Itās not just a beautification projectāitās a creative statement, a symbol of welcome, and a celebration of who we are. Santa Cruz isnāt just getting a new entranceāitās getting a story, told in art, for everyone to see.
