On June 19, 2025, the Santa Cruz Fire Department responded to a reported wildland fire in the area of Natural Bridges State Park.  While responding, it was reported that there were 30-foot flames in eucalyptus trees, with an upgraded fire response made.
Upon the arrival of the first fire unit, Engine 3116 reported an approximate 100′ x 50′ vegetation fire in grass and eucalyptus trees moving at a rapid rate of spread with structures threatened.  Furthermore, E3116 reported that the fire was slope- and wind-driven, with the Natural Bridges Visitor Center directly impacted by the fire.  This first-due crew then quickly deployed hose lines between the structure and the fire in highly unfavorable fire conditions.
As additional fire units arrived on the scene, additional hose lines were deployed, and hand crews cut lines to prevent further fire spread.  Additionally, firefighters quickly accessed the Natural Bridges Visitor Center to prepare the structure for further fire impact and evacuation of the immediate area.
As mutual aid fire agencies arrived on the scene, a second fire was noted east of the original fire in a sensitive area of vegetation.  Units were quickly deployed to this new location, where a 30′ x 30′ fire was noted.  With the assistance of a Cal Fire helicopter and their crew, the fire was quickly extinguished and contained.
At approximately 4:30 p.m., it was reported that both fires were fully contained and the Natural Bridges Visitor Center had been saved.
The fire was determined to be accidental in nature, with the cause found to be an unauthorized cooking fire.  Additionally, through the quick activation of 911 and the efforts of all involved fire departments, the incident was stabilized, and no injuries were reported.
The Santa Cruz Fire Department would like to thank all the allied agencies that assisted in the incident and the support of State Parks staff.
